Mark 12:1–12 (LEB)
1And he began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a trough for the winepress, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey.
2And he sent a slave to the tenant farmers at the proper time, so that he could collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the tenant farmers.
3And they seized him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
4And again he sent to them another slave, and that one they struck on the head and dishonored.
5And he sent another, and that one they killed. And he sent many others, some of whom they beat and some of whom they killed.
6He had one more, a beloved son. Last of all he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
7But those tenant farmers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’
8And they seized and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.
9What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others.
10Have you not read this scripture: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the cornerstone.
11This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
12And they were seeking to arrest him, and they were afraid of the crowd, because they knew that he had told the parable with reference to them. And they left him and went away.

Matthew 23:1–12 (LEB)
1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,
2saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses.
3Therefore do and observe everything that they tell you, but do not do as they do, for they tell others to do something and do not do it themselves.
4And they tie up heavy burdens and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing with their finger to move them.
5And they do all their deeds in order to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries broad and make their tassels long.
6And they love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues
7and the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
8But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ because one is your teacher, and you are all brothers,
9And do not call anyone your father on earth, for one is your heavenly Father.
10And do not be called teachers, because one is your teacher, the Christ.
11And the greatest among you will be your servant.
12And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Luke 17:11–19 (LEB)
11And it happened that while traveling toward Jerusalem, he was passing through the region between Samaria and Galilee.
12And as he was entering into a certain village, ten men met him—lepers, who stood at a distance.
13And they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14And when he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And it happened that as they were going, they were cleansed.
15But one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.
16And he fell on his face at his feet, giving thanks to him. And he was a Samaritan.
17So Jesus answered and said, “Were not ten cleansed? And where are the nine?
18Was no one found to turn back and give praise to God except this foreigner?”
19And he said to him, “Get up and go your way. Your faith has saved you.”

Mark 7:1–23 (LEB)
1And the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered to him.
2And they saw that some of his disciples were eating their bread with unclean—that is, unwashed—hands.
3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, thus holding fast to the traditions of the elders.
4And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions which they have received and hold fast to—for example, the washing of cups and pitchers and bronze kettles and dining couches.)
5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unclean hands?”
6So he said to them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far, far away from me.
7And they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8Abandoning the commandment of God, you hold fast to the tradition of men.”
9And he said to them, “You splendidly ignore the commandment of God so that you can keep your tradition.
10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘The one who speaks evil of father or mother must certainly die.’
11But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or to his mother, “Whatever benefit you would have received from me is corban” (that is, a gift to God),
12you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother,
13thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down, and you do many similar things such as this.”
14And summoning the crowd again, he said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand:
15There is nothing outside of a person that is able to defile him by going into him. But the things that go out of a person are the things that defile a person.”
17And when he entered into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable.
18And he said to them, “So are you also without understanding? Do you not understand that everything that is outside that goes into a person is not able to defile him?
19For it does not enter into his heart but into his stomach, and goes out into the latrine”—thus declaring all foods clean.
20And he said, “What comes out of a person, that defiles a person.
21For from within, from the heart of people, come evil plans, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,
22adulteries, acts of greed, malicious deeds, deceit, licentiousness, envy, abusive speech, pride, foolishness.
23All these evil things come from within and defile a person.”

Matthew 4:1–11 (LEB)
1Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil,
2and after he had fasted forty days and forty nights, then he was hungry.
3And the tempter approached and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order that these stones become bread.”
4But he answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man will not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’ ”
5Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the highest point of the temple
6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down! For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will lift you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
7Jesus said to him, “On the other hand it is written, ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
8Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory,
9and he said to him, “I will give to you all these things, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan, for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”
11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and began ministering to him.

Luke 15:11–32 (LEB)
11And he said, “A certain man had two sons.
12And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that is coming to me.’ So he divided his assets between them.
13And after not many days, the younger son gathered everything and went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his wealth by living wastefully.
14And after he had spent everything, there was a severe famine throughout that country, and he began to be in need.
15And he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to tend pigs.
16And he was longing to fill his stomach with the carob pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving anything to him.
17“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have an abundance of food, and I am dying here from hunger!
18I will set out and go to my father and will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight!
19I am no longer worthy to be called your son! Make me like one of your hired workers.’
20And he set out and came to his own father. But while he was still a long way away, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
21And his son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight! I am no longer worthy to be called your son!’
22But his father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet!
23And bring the fattened calf—kill it and let us eat and celebrate,
24because this son of mine was dead, and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.
25“Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.
26And he summoned one of the slaves and asked what these things meant.
27And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has gotten him back healthy.’
28But he became angry and did not want to go in. So his father came out and began to implore him.
29But he answered and said to his father, ‘Behold, so many years I have served you, and have never disobeyed your command! And you never gave me a young goat so that I could celebrate with my friends!
30But when this son of yours returned—who has consumed your assets with prostitutes—you killed the fattened calf for him!’
31But he said to him, ‘Child, you are always with me, and everything I have belongs to you.
32But it was necessary to celebrate and to rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead, and is alive, and was lost, and is found!’ ”

Mark 5:21–43 (LEB)
21And after Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered to him, and he was beside the sea.
22And one of the rulers of the synagogue came—Jairus by name—and when he saw him, he fell down at his feet.
23And he was imploring him many times, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death! Come, lay your hands on her, so that she will get well and will live.”
24And he went with him, and a large crowd was following him and pressing around him.
25And there was a woman who was suffering from hemorrhages twelve years.
26And she had endured many things under many physicians, and had spent all that she had and had received no help at all, but instead became worse.
27When she heard about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind him and touched his cloak,
28for she was saying, “If I touch just his clothing, I will be healed!”
29And immediately her hemorrhage stopped and she realized in her body that she was healed of her suffering.
30And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from himself, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothing?”
31And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing upon you, and you say ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32And he was looking around to see the one who had done this.
33So the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
34But he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be well from your suffering.”
35While he was still speaking, they came from the synagogue ruler’s house saying, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the Teacher further?”
36But Jesus, ignoring what was said, told the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid—only believe!”
37And he did not allow anyone to follow along with him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James.
38And they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw a commotion, and people weeping and wailing loudly.
39And when he entered, he said to them, “Why are you agitated and weeping? The child is not dead, but is sleeping.”
40And they began laughing at him. But he sent them all out and took along the father and mother of the child, and those who were with him, and went in to where the child was.
41And taking hold of the child’s hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”),
42and immediately the girl stood up and began walking around (for she was twelve years old). And immediately they were utterly and completely astonished.
43And he commanded them strictly that no one should learn of this, and said to give her something to eat.

Matthew 19:16–30 (LEB)
16And behold, someone came up to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing must I do so that I will have eternal life?”
17And he said to him, “Why are you asking me about what is good? There is one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments!”
18He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “Do not commit murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
19honor your father and your mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.”
20The young man said to him, “All these I have observed. What do I still lack?”
21Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give the proceeds to the poor—and you will have treasure in heaven—and come, follow me.”
22But when the young man heard the statement, he went away sorrowful, because he was one who had many possessions.
23And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I say to you that with difficulty a rich person will enter into the kingdom of heaven!
24And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich person into the kingdom of God.”
25So when the disciples heard this, they were extremely amazed, saying, “Then who can be saved?”
26But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With human beings this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
27Then Peter answered and said to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you. What then will there be for us?”
28And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you that in the renewal of the world, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me—you also will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields on account of my name will receive a hundred times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
30But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

John 5:1–15 (LEB)
1After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool called in Aramaic Bethzatha, which has five porticoes.
3In these were lying a large number of those who were sick, blind, lame, paralyzed.
5And a certain man was there who had been thirty-eight years in his sickness.
6Jesus, when he saw this one lying there and knew that he had been sick a long time already, said to him, “Do you want to become well?”
7The one who was sick answered him, “Sir, I do not have anyone that, whenever the water is stirred up, could put me into the pool. But while I am coming, another goes down before me.”
8Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!”
9And immediately the man became well and picked up his mat and began to walk. (Now it was the Sabbath on that day.)
10So the Jews were saying to the one who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not permitted for you to pick up the mat!”
11But he answered them, “The one who made me well—that one said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’ ”
12So they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk?’ ”
13But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn while a crowd was in the place.
14After these things Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “Look, you have become well! Sin no longer, lest something worse happen to you.”
15The man went and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the one who made him well.

Luke 14:15–35 (LEB)
15Now when one of those reclining at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
16But he said to him, “A certain man was giving a large banquet and invited many.
17And he sent his slave at the hour of the banquet to say to those who have been invited, ‘Come, because now it is ready!’
18And they all alike began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I have purchased a field, and I must go out to look at it. I ask you, consider me excused.’
19And another said, ‘I have purchased five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. I ask you, consider me excused.’
20And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and for this reason I am not able to come.’
21And the slave came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame!’
22And the slave said, ‘Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’
23And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges and press them to come in, so that my house will be filled!
24For I say to you that none of those persons who were invited will taste my banquet!’ ”
25Now large crowds were going along with him, and he turned around and said to them,
26“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and furthermore, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
27Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28For which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
29Otherwise after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish it, all who see it will begin to ridicule him,
30saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish!’
31Or what king, going out to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand.
32But if not, while the other is still far away, he sends an ambassador and asks for terms of peace.
33In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all his own possessions cannot be my disciple.
34“Now salt is good, but if salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be made salty?
35It is usable neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; they throw it out. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
